Look for original stone, wood or brick construction; original carved jharokha windows, pillared courtyards (chowks), or high-vaulted ceilings. Be wary of properties that have simply applied a coat of "heritage" paint to a modern concrete structure.

Some heritage hotels will arrange for family recipes, passed down through generations, to be cooked specially for guests.

The best heritage stays offer more than comfortable rooms. Look for properties that arrange evening cultural programmes — folk music, puppet shows, traditional dance performances — as well as guided heritage walks, cooking demonstrations and artisan visits. 6. Honest Room Descriptions
Heritage rooms are not always large or perfectly uniform. A 200-year-old palace was not built to hotel specifications. Expect some rooms to have quirks: low ceilings, small bathrooms, uneven floors, limited natural light.
